What exactly is umbilical cord wharton\u2019s jelly?<\/strong><\/p>\n <\/p>\n First of all, the name \u201cWharton\u2019s Jelly\u201d was derived in the 1600\u2019s from Dr. Thomas Wharton, who first described it. It is a gelatinous substance within the umbilical cord, that surrounds the two umbilical arteries and the one vein. (1991)<\/a>. Not until 2004 when the first report providing robust evidence that WJ-stromal cells can be classified as MSCs was published (Wang et al., 2004<\/a>).<\/p>\n The highest density of MSC\u2019s have been seen in what is called the \u201cperivascular tissue\u201d, which surrounds the blood vessels. In this area, researchers have seen mesenchymal stem cells with a distinct propensity of colony forming units (CFU\u2019s), which are indicative of significant self renewal capability. These researchers also showed that one out of every 300 cells obtained from this \u201cperivascular tissue\u201d was an MSC with CFU propensity.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n One impressive thing about Wharton\u2019s Jelly is that there are no ethical issues obtaining the tissue. FDA regulated labs in the United States obtain the tissue from a donor after a scheduled c-section. Normally, the umbilical cord is considered medical waste. But in these cases, the umbilical cord is donated with the mother being consented and undergoing a considerable amount of medical screening beforehand.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n The Wharton\u2019s jelly is processed at FDA regulated labs very carefully.
